Tropical Dance Party & Dia De Los Muertos Celebration!
According to its members, the name Buyepongo means “to cause a ruckus” – which certainly describes the scene on the dance floors of Los Angeles whenever the band launches into its dizzyingly energetic, instantly infectious rhythms. But it also describes Buyepongo’s riotous mash-up of influences, which absorbs hip-hop, punk, funk, and jazz sounds into a delirious tropical blend of styles from across the Latin American diaspora. Like its name, the band is part hybrid, part invention, something untranslatable that nevertheless perfectly captures its uniquely vibrant spirit.
QUITAPENAS, one word – all caps, four syllables – all claps, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun in 2011. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s, 70s and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave your worries behind.

Words by: Mike Styles Our pal and highly sought out Brazilian record collector and merchant from East Village NYC by way of Brazil is traveling with his amazing vinyl to Los Angeles! Joel Stones is bringing the heat, spirit and legacy of his shop Tropicalia in Furs to Rappcats, pop-up location this weekend in Highland Park.
It’s been almost three years since Tropicalia In Furs has gone Underground to Otherworldly Constellations to dig for the known + Unknown Raw Beats. Only you have the power to uncover the results of this Intergalactic Voyage. The Vault will finally reopen on July 25 – 26 at RAPPCATS!!!
“I will bring tons of Brazilian records, 45s, LPs, some jazz, funk, soul, prog, psych, garage, boxes of 45s with good French, Turkish, African, Northern Soul, tons of crazy stuff.” – Joel Stones
With this road trip/record caravan of course comes a long-awaited mix of gems by the man himself, Abobora Mechanica, previewing some of the stuff that will be up for purchase at this very exclusive engagement. We’ve been bumping this set all week, its a hour long and perfect for the season. If you’re into collecting records from around the world, or new to the style you don’t want to miss this. Take advantage, you won’t find original pressings and quantities from Brazil like this anywhere else in the city. See you there!
Thanks to our friends at Vibes and Stuff Radio, and gracious hosts at The Artform Studio, we had the opportunity to contribute to the all vinyl invitational for Record Store Day 2015.
