Beats of All-Nations presents Re:Fresh with special guests: The Funk Ark (Washington DC) featuring Will Rast of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra + Re:Fresh & Beats of All-Nations DJs: JB – MIKE STYLES STRYKE UNO – PORCHLITE SUBIRA
The Funk Ark:
“Bringing it and taking listeners on a global funk journey that will have you melting into the dancefloor.” – Giant Step
Washington D.C. native, Will Rast (of Antibalas), has been composing music and playing professionally since the age of 14. A love of vintage Funk and Soul, as well as a wide range of instrumental jazz styles were the impetus behind the formation of The Funk Ark in 2007. As a member of Washington DC’s fast growing community of artists, it was easy to find incredibly talented musicians to form a group big enough to create the range of sound he wanted. The band began with compositions that were reminiscent of Lonnie Liston Smith, or Herbie Hancock, but it was Will Rast’s growing interest in the Afro Beat music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Mono Mono of Nigeria, as well as Mulatu Astatke and Mahmoud Ahmed of Ethiopia, and the legendary Salsa ensemble The Fania Allstars, that caused the band’s direction to the shift towards a more polyrhythmic, dance-inspiring, funk sound.
The musical journey of Will Rast, which currently includes being a member of international touring sensations, Antibalas, has helped The Funk Ark to amass a wild, beautiful collection of albums over the years, revealing his personal evolution of funk and rhythm. And through these albums, and The Funk Ark’s live shows, the group keeps audiences moving, and awe-inspired, on the dancefloor.

On episode nine of Beats of All-Nations Radio we are excited to bring to you a brand new mix from Los Angeles producer Co.fee. He’s been producing beats since 2005 and in 2011 he released his first EP on My Hollow Drum, titled Easy Listening, followed by the Bermuda EP released in 2012. Co.fee brings a uniquely refreshing feel to the show with this drum heavy eccentric mix of music from the international community.
“This mix is basically a playlist of my favorite songs and artists that I am feeling at the moment. I tried to keep it as diverse as possible.” -Co.fee
On Saturday January 17th, 2015, Re:Fresh [Pomona] began a new venture alongside Def Tribe and the new Flyway at Fox venue in Pomona. The first event featured the unmatched skills of DJ Nu-Mark of the legendary group Jurassic 5. In his last Los Angeles show before his upcoming TRDMRK tour with Slimkid3 (of the Pharcyde) promoting the latest, to be followed by an international Jurassic 5 tour. The party was a huge success, the only remnants are these photos taken by Farah Sosa. We’ve also seen a great amount of fan photos and videos out there. We’d love to see what you’ve captured, send your photos and videos from this event to email@example.com. We are grateful that we are able to take part in this surge of incredible events in Pomona, we thank you all for your continued support!
2014 was a big year for the growth of Beats of All-Nations. Though every year we look back and think about what more we could have done, we did attain some personal and organizational goals that we are very proud of in ’14. On Beats of All-Nations Radio Episode 006, we compiled highlights from our podcasts this year, with guests Cell Uno, Bombay, Radius, Sev Seveer, DJ Jimbo Jenkins, Gingee. We also put together clips from our own radio appearances made on Culture Remixed, Soul Circle Radio, Vibes and Stuff featuring Porchlite, El Toro Negro, Gabe Real and Mike Styles with DJ Ethos. In addition we spotlight our first official release by Sev Seveer, Constant Elevation: Odessa Star, traveling through a couple of ‘movements’ from the album while Seveer discusses the project’s meaning with DJ Moppy on Future Music Radio (Q4, Chicago). Collectively we also had a great year hosting and taking part in some great events. We would like to thank everyone who supported on any level. We are looking forward to the year to come and hope to build on this community with more of you along the way!
