“GOING BACK TO CALI: CUT CHEMIST’S COLOMBIAN CRATES REMIXED” [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Upon return from a recent trip to the deepest of crates in Colombia, Cut Chemist and Beats of All-Nations sought out to remix a unique set of dusty records, each different from the last, with an equally diverse list of producers. Going Back to Cali: Cut Chemist’s Colombian Crates Remixed is MORE THAN CUMBIA, its a reflection on a tropical culture rich in spirit, creativity and passion strung together with field recordings found along the way. These records were bought in Cali, Colombia during Patronio Alvarez Festival last year, hence the name.

Our trip begins with folklore Colombiano favorites Los Corraleros de Majagual over a crunchy boom-bap by Co. Fee from Los Angeles’ beat collective, My Hollow Drum. Dance Kill Move (Stockholm, Sweden) adds some serious low end to Los Jovenes de Hierro’s classic charanga, “Ritmo Sabroso.” Ubiquity recording artist, currently residing in Colobmia, Bosq and Yukicito of La Junta (Los Angeles) contribute absolute party starters, while El Dusty’s “Mi Chola” give Los Teen Agers a taste Corpus Christi, TX. Atropolis (Queens) pays homage with a heavy stripped down edit of Julio y su Combo’s “Lamento Cumbiambero” and Los Chicos Altos (Barcelona) add in some rub-a-dub flavor on Los Hermanos Tuiran’s “Lluvia.” In addition we explore national treasures and the lesser known, new styles of chirimía, porro, pachanga, salsa and cumbia as interpreted by Sumohair (Los Angeles), Gabe Real (Pomona, CA) and Greece duo SUPERSAN (aka Panama Cardoon & Mister Kentro).

EARLY ARRIVAL HIGHLY SUGGESTED!

The end of our residency at Dba256 Bar & Gallery is upon us, our decision wasn’t an easy one and it’s certainly not goodbye forever. Individually our plates are full with great projects and events on the horizon, collectively we will return to dba256 for some very special events in 2017. We are thankful to have served #Pomona, bi-weekly since July, 2008. We’ve met a lot of great people and shared some fantastic memories. We would love to see everyone in the house, OUR HOME, one more time this year on Saturday November 12th. Thanks to everyone who has helped Re:Fresh become the most culturally unique party in Pomona, possibly ever!

With Love,

A Stable Sound Ep. 2: 808s and Heartaches

14795869_10210529992023400_1755319771_o
Cut Chemist
begins the second EP with a dedication to his fans at the previous week’s Tipper and Friends show in Denver by playing a section of his ‘head nod psychedelic’ set. Mike Styles follows up last week’s Brazilian selections with classic funk and hip hop. We then explore the connection between dance music legends Egyptian Lover and Arthur Baker as well as Cut’s first encounter with hip hop through a live concert he recorded in 1983. L’Trimm is reunited on the air to help bring the party up a notch along with DJ IQ on the cut. Put this all together with a Bob Dylan shout out for good measure and you have the second Episode of ASS…

Listen to A Stable Sound Live every 1st & 3rd Saturday (…and sometimes 5th) live on dublab from 6pm-8pm (PST).

Sev Seveer – Smithereens EP (Limited 300 Vinyl w/ 3 Bonus tracks)

>>>>DOWNLOAD & ORDER LIMITED VINYL HERE<<<<

Smithereens is yet another one of my journeys into bringing visual stimuli to sonic fruition. In this case, my prompt and inspiration was Neo-Impressionism, particularly Pointillism. Last year I created an instrumental that eventually went on to be the title track of this project. The song was so complex in nature; I couldn’t even tell you where my mind was when I was arranging it. It wasn’t even a recording that I was sure I liked at first, mostly because of its frantic and composited structure. In an unrelated instance (or maybe it was related, subconsciously) I was reading about Georges Seurat and his role in leading the French Neo-Impressionist movement in the late 1800s. It occurred to me that this style of visual art was the only way I could describe the song that would eventually go on to establish Smithereens as a project. Initially when I began to lay out supporting instrumentals, I made stringent attempts to abide by the complexity of the concept song. I found that it couldn’t be done, and that the beat was truly a moment in time. I then decided to continue studying Pointillism/Divisionism and some of its key characteristics— the progressive yet realistic use of primary colors, lighting, contrast and also very importantly, movement— as my guide in arranging new instrumentals in their own unique way, while still keeping with the prompt.

In music theory, the parallel/counterpart to Pointillism is known as Punctualism. Punctualism essentially gives unique individual life to each note in a piece. Arpeggiated notes of varying pitches, lengths and dynamics take the place of the ‘colored dots’ that you see in pieces such as Seurat’s most famous work, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” The techniques were independently established of course, i.e neither gave birth to the other. Their juxtaposition is largely interpreted perspective.
