Shelfie Baps: New Mix of Unreleased Sev Seveer Beats!

Words by Sev Seveer
This mix is a collection of old rap instrumentals that never quite made it out of the lab, made between 2007-2013. This stuff is mostly a reflection of my early forms (but those forms will always be present!), and to show that I’ve always, from the beginning, tried to keep a solid range of beat proficiency, “Styles Upon Styles” as we say. I’ve avoided trying to box myself, and made sure to maintain my scholarship as a student of beatmaking

Most of these beats were created in software via midi controllers and in-DAW audio chopping from when I first started working in Cubase in 2007; however, there are some very early SP 404/202 beats in here as well.

My next EP, Smithereens, is a journey in using beats to sonically interpret neo-impressionism, specifically Pointillism. The first single, “Seuratcha Sauce”, will be out via Beats of All-Nations in June.

Featured Release: DJ EROK “Beautiful Chaos” EP [VOIDSHIFT]

Words By: Mike Styles

cover3

Earlier this month our pal DJ Erok released Beautiful Chaos, his first official EP on Voidshift.  A ‘critical beatdown,’ of a release if you would.  Beautiful Chaos has a cryptic sound so dark the passage to towards the light is unexpected and lives under layers of reverberating drums and bottommost bass.  With production features from wave Groove on the warped tempos of “Drop” to  the mantra trapped out “Poison” with Curtiss King, Beautiful Chaos will move your mind to through “a dark tunnel with a light at the unreachable end.”  Keep an eye out for an exclusive and limited USB release!

If you’re not familiar we encourage you to dig deeper and check out Erok’s long list of mixes, remixes and the other works via Soundcloud.

Beats of All-Nations Radio Episode 009: Mixed by Co.fee

BOAN 009 CoFee Cover Art On episode nine of Beats of All-Nations Radio we are excited to bring to you a brand new mix from Los Angeles producer Co.fee. He’s been producing beats since 2005 and in 2011 he released his first EP on My Hollow Drum, titled Easy Listening, followed by the Bermuda EP released in 2012.  Co.fee brings a uniquely refreshing feel to the show with this drum heavy eccentric mix of music from the international community.

“This mix is basically a playlist of my favorite songs and artists that I am feeling at the moment.  I tried to keep it as diverse as possible.” -Co.fee

#BeatsOfAllDILLA: 28 Days of James “Jay Dee” Yancey

DAY 28: The J Dilla x Brasil Connection

The DILLA x BRASIL Connection

Today is the last day of our month long series #BeatsofAllDilla.  We are about to go full circle…As we transition out of J Dilla Month and into our next venture, Brazilian Carnaval, which begins today and ends with our 4th Annual Brazilian Carnaval in Pomona at Re:Fresh, we leave you with “Obrigado Dilla,” which translates from Brazilian Portuguese to “Thank You Dilla.”

“Obrigado Dilla” was produced and documented by our friends at Mochilla following the Brasilintime premiere show at SESC Pompeii in São Paulo, 2006.  It features Brazil’s championed DJs Nuts and Primo (RIP) on the cuts and punching buttons on the SP-303 while drummer Pupillo keeps the time on the beat.  Together the three did a tribute featuring Dilla’s Brazilian influenced production for the Pharcyde, “Runnin.”  Again shout out to B+ and Coleman of Mochilla who captured some of the most iconic photos of Dilla in existence, including several we used throughout the month.

Here’s a fun note, we had an opportunity to host B+, Eric Coleman and DJ Nuts on several occasions at an event in Downtown Upland, CA called The Lapa Lounge.  On one of those nights in 2007, the Mochilla crew blessed us with the first public viewing of “Obrigado Dilla” with our small and intimate crowd.

Here is the original sample, Stan Getz “Saudade Vem Correndo” which translates to the theme and title of the Pharcyde track. Coincidence?

Bonus Nuggets:

Jay Dee Samples Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell:

and here’s an unreleased track where he samples Sergio Mendes drums and another record covering the Bossa Nova standard “Agua de Beber.”

The Dilla x Brazil connection goes even deeper, when asked about the short, prolific “Rico Suave Bossa Nova” track on Welcome 2 Detroit, he said  “I fell in love with Brazilian music the day I listened to a Sergio Mendes album.  We used to have jam sessions in the studio after work was done, one day my mans Karriem Riggins came through.  I asked him for ‘bossa nova.’  He gave me exactly what I needed.”

We bet Dilla would’ve bugged out if he heard his bossa nova groove covered by the legendary Azymuth!

and that’s what we call going full circle on the J Dilla x Brasil connection.
