NEW RELEASE :: “GOING BACK TO CALI: CUT CHEMIST’S COLOMBIAN CRATES REMIXED”

Upon return from a recent trip to the deepest of crates in Colombia, Cut Chemist and Beats of All-Nations sought out to remix a unique set of dusty records, each different from the last, with an equally diverse list of producers. Going Back to Cali: Cut Chemist’s Colombian Crates Remixed is MORE THAN CUMBIA, its a reflection on a tropical culture rich in spirit, creativity and passion strung together with field recordings found along the way. These records were bought in Cali, Colombia during Patronio Alvarez Festival last year, hence the name.

Our trip begins with folklore Colombiano favorites Los Corraleros de Majagual over a crunchy boom-bap by Co. Fee from Los Angeles’ beat collective, My Hollow Drum. Dance Kill Move (Stockholm, Sweden) adds some serious low end to Los Jovenes de Hierro’s classic charanga, “Ritmo Sabroso.” Ubiquity recording artist, currently residing in Colobmia, Bosq and Yukicito of La Junta (Los Angeles) contribute absolute party starters, while El Dusty’s “Mi Chola” give Los Teen Agers a taste Corpus Christi, TX. Atropolis (Queens) pays homage with a heavy stripped down edit of Julio y su Combo’s “Lamento Cumbiambero” and Los Chicos Altos (Barcelona) add in some rub-a-dub flavor on Los Hermanos Tuiran’s “Lluvia.” In addition we explore national treasures and the lesser known, new styles of chirimía, porro, pachanga, salsa and cumbia as interpreted by Sumohair (Los Angeles), Gabe Real (Pomona, CA) and Greece duo SUPERSAN (aka Panama Cardoon & Mister Kentro).

EARLY ARRIVAL HIGHLY SUGGESTED!

The end of our residency at Dba256 Bar & Gallery is upon us, our decision wasn’t an easy one and it’s certainly not goodbye forever. Individually our plates are full with great projects and events on the horizon, collectively we will return to dba256 for some very special events in 2017. We are thankful to have served #Pomona, bi-weekly since July, 2008. We’ve met a lot of great people and shared some fantastic memories. We would love to see everyone in the house, OUR HOME, one more time this year on Saturday November 12th. Thanks to everyone who has helped Re:Fresh become the most culturally unique party in Pomona, possibly ever!

With Love,

Tropical Dance Party & Dia De Los Muertos Celebration!

Buyepongo:
According to its members, the name Buyepongo means “to cause a ruckus” – which certainly describes the scene on the dance floors of Los Angeles whenever the band launches into its dizzyingly energetic, instantly infectious rhythms. But it also describes Buyepongo’s riotous mash-up of influences, which absorbs hip-hop, punk, funk, and jazz sounds into a delirious tropical blend of styles from across the Latin American diaspora. Like its name, the band is part hybrid, part invention, something untranslatable that nevertheless perfectly captures its uniquely vibrant spirit.

QUITA PENAS:
QUITAPENAS, one word – all caps, four syllables – all claps, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun in 2011. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s, 70s and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave your worries behind.

DJ Gabe Real Live from Coachella Stage 2016

Words By Shad Powers, The Desert Sun
April 23, 2016

You might not know Moreno Valley based DJ Gabe Real, but if you collect Coachella lineup T-shirts or posters, you’ve seen his name almost as much as anyone.

He was the first act out on the main stage Friday during Weekend Two at Coachella and that marked his ninth appearance at the famous festival. That’s right, he’s played here nine times from the Yuma Tent to the ultimate stage.

His first time was back in 2001 as a DJ for Supernatural also on the main stage. Last year he opened the Sunday afternoon set on the Outdoor Stage. He’s had different names throughout the years. DJ Lesto, DJ Wiens and now DJ Gabe Real.

On Friday he kicked out his usual mix of reggae jams and late 1980s, early 1990s hip-hop to a late-arriving crowd under the hot early-afternoon sun on the main stage where LCD Soundsystem would headline later.

He made sure to mix in some tributes. The year 2016 has been particularly rough on the world of musical influencers, but DJ Gabe Real pinpointed three to give a thumping shoutout to at Coachella. He played snippets of “Kiss” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover” in memory of Prince. The crowd cheered and pointed solemnly to the sky. He also played “Scenario” by Tribe Called Quest to honor Phife Dawg who also recently passed away. And finally he played David Bowie’s pop hit “Let’s Dance.”

He weaved them into his set seamlessly with “Kiss” rolling right into the drum beat opening of Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison” for example.

Wearing a Wiens Brewing Company T-shirt (Temecula Brewery) and sun glasses, DJ Gabe Real didn’t do much in the way of showmanship. He let his sound speak for itself.

A lot of your favorite hip-hop jams were part of the set, “Me, Myself and I,” “Now That We Found Love” etc.

He was followed on the stage by Joey Bada$$, so by the time DJ Gabe Real’s set end he was playing for quite a nice size crowd.

If you missed his set, don’t worry. There’s about an 80 percent chance he’ll be back in some capacity next year if history is any indication.
