In August 2011, I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes of a very short, yet historic tour. It was called “Tunnel Vision” and it was only on the West Coast. The Cut Chemist curated show, featured Edan, Paten Locke, Mr. Lif and of course Cut Chemist. The show hit only five cities, Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and San Diego. Like I said it was short lived, but the show caught international buzz once word and fan video displaying how things were going down at these concerts.
Each show was special in its own way. The House of Blues, Los Angeles show for instance was indeed a homecoming for Cut Chemist as his own supporting cast included Myka 9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Deantoni Parks (Mars Volta), Blackbird, Hymnal, and a mini-reunion with Chali2na, DJ Nu-mark and DJ Z-trip. Cut played a whole new set including segments of his “Sound of the Police” release, on one-turntable and a loop pedal. He also unleashed new music on the crowd, and did a whole lot of impromptu, without losing focus. The above video shows Cut Chemist and Deantoni Parks on a total improvised drum/scratch session at the tours first stop in Anaheim.
Up until this tour I had never seen Edan and Paten Locke live, it hardens me to say that because they were in fact the best hip hop act I have seen perform in years. In the video above you can see true versatility displayed by Edan as he doubles up records while he raps simultaneously at a rapid pace with Paten Locke. The show is very entertaining indeed, but it must be noted that every aspect of their performance was an extremely challenging test of skill. Nonetheless the duo made it look a lot easier than it truly is. The video below shows Edan playing the guitar and kazoo harmoniously as Paten Locke supports on xylophone, then wait for the moment dedicated to “Racial Harmony,” this only gives a taste of how far across the spectrum these two artists cover in their 50 minute act.
Paten Locke also opened up the show, as a DJ backing the legendary Mr. Lif. Mr. Lif’s live show is also top notch. Coming clean cut with a suit, one might think “Lif’s gone a little corporate.” That is until you hear the resistant emcee, still pumping the same core values he always has. His show is very enlightening as it is entertaining as Lif incorporates sketches around the music. To say the least he was the perfect way to break the ice in front of every audience. The artists on this tour displayed a tremendous amount of talent and it was even better to see them all come together as reinforcement on each other’s sets.
