As listed in the last couple of posts, last month I played a special all vinyl Brazilian set at “Music Makes the Difference,” held at the Verdugo Bar in Los Angeles. I have gotten a hold of the audio and have made it available for you here today thanks to DJ’s El Dopa and Schpilkas. The 84-minute set includes a variety of music from the black rio movement, samba, samba rock, mpb, tropicalia, hip hop and other bugged out sounds from Brazil. The music played in this mix is extra special, not only because it is on vinyl, but because I sought out most of it in Brazil over the last five years. Included in the mix is music from Jorge Ben, Tim Maia, Marcos Valle, Maria Bethania, Antonio, Gal Costa, Claudette Soares, Edu Lobo, Banda Uniao Black, Rappin’ Hood feat. Gilberto Gil, Bebeto and so much more, including an ultra-dope intro provided by Brasilintime (Mochilla) Limited Breaks lp. Enjoy Mike Styles “Brazilian Wax @ Music Makes the Difference” here!
This last month I have been very fortunate to play out several different venues all calling for different, yet similar styles of music. Lucky for us, summer loves percussion! Tonight (Saturday August 21, 2010) I have been invited to play at “The Fly Ball” held every third Saturday at one of my favorite venues, The Grandstar Jazz Club in Chinatown, Los Angeles, CA. Also going on is Chinatown Nights, giving more to what should be a great night. If you’re interested in getting in on the fun tonight you should RSVP to email@example.com before 12 p.m.
As previously mentioned, this month I’ve been doing some mixing at some great places. I played alongside Andrea Ferraz with D’agua, Anthony Valadez (KCRW), The Bodega Soundsystem and Marlon Funtes (thanks Marlon!) at the Official Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk Lounge, held at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. The Art Walk takes place every 2nd Thursday, be sure to check out what Marlon’s got in store for you on September 9th.
Also I have been spinning events at My Delight Cupakery for their August featured “Thursday Nite Bites” weekly events, where they have brought Gourmet Food Trucks out to the Inland Empire, and link them with their award-winning (literally) and mind-bending cupcakes. If you haven’t checked them out yet do yourself a favor. This small shop has only been open for nine months and its won both the Los Angeles Cupcake Challenge for the Breakfast Cupcake (as seen above), as well as last month’s OC Cupcake Camp. They put out a new feature flavor every week. I also happen to select the music for the shop, so you can enjoy a great soundtrack with your self-indulgence. This Thursday August 26th, will be the final event for the month, but this bakery is promising much more upcoming stuff so add them to your social network and stay tuned to them it’s always a great time.
