Gilles Peterson in 2010 World Cup Sound Clash!

It’s not any news that super international tastemaker, and BBC Radio1 host, Gilles Peterson is a fan of the futbol sport, or “soccer” in Americana. In celebration of  the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he has fused his world renown song selecting with spirit of the competition taking the sport and music to the next level.  On March 3, 2010 Peterson hosted a soundclash pitting the preliminary teams against each other, in FIFA’s official bracket.  It is simple, 32 countries and 32 tracks to represent them.  Kicking it off with the much anticipated match up between South Africa and Mexico.  Watch how South Africa’s DJ Mujava matches up with the Mexican Institute of Sound. The track list speaks for itself, a lot of music I am sure will be new to you as it was to me.  Though, if you follow this blog you will recognize Nneka, who represents Nigeria in the song battle.  It is very nice to hear a lot of hip hop on here from around the globe.  How dope would it be to really see such soundclashes like Portugal’s Baruka Som Sistema grouped in competition with Brazil’s Caetano Veloso, also featured in a previous post with Banda Black Rio.  You can imagine how difficult to be it could be to pick songs to represent countries like Nigeria, Brazil, Mexico or England.  Imagine how hard it would be to find amazing tunes from places like North Korea.  Gilles does it, and does it with much precision here.  Enjoy the games!
